The job and what made it specific
This was a queen-size mattress with multiple large urine stains spread across the surface. The staining was significant in area, and the odour that came with it was noticeable from the moment we walked in.
Urine is one of the more involved stain types we deal with on mattresses, and the challenge isn’t only what’s visible. The liquid penetrates quickly through the surface fabric and into the foam below. What sits on top is the residue – the uric acid crystals and proteins left behind as the moisture evaporates. Those compounds are what produce the persistent smell, and they don’t respond to water and general cleaning products. Heat or plain extraction can actually lock them further into the material rather than removing them.
There’s a second problem that’s specific to mattresses: you cannot over-wet them. A sofa cushion or upholstered chair has some tolerance for moisture because you can set it upright, run fans on it, and reach the interior layers relatively well. A mattress is thick, dense foam that holds water and dries from the outside in. Introduce too much moisture during cleaning and you create conditions in the interior that take days to resolve – and that can go in a direction you don’t want.
So the job had two requirements pulling against each other: enough chemistry and extraction to properly address the biology of the staining, and strict moisture control throughout. That combination is what shaped how we worked.
Getting the biology before touching the extractor
Before the machine came out, we applied BioEnzyme prespray directly to all the affected areas.
BioEnzyme is an enzymatic cleaner, which means it works differently from a standard prespray. Rather than simply loosening surface soiling, it introduces enzymes that break down the organic compounds in the stain at the molecular level – the proteins, uric acid, and biological material that are the source of both the staining and the odour. For urine in particular, this step is what separates a clean that looks right from a clean that actually is right. You can extract the visible residue and leave the surface looking clear, but if the organic content hasn’t been neutralised, the odour will return – especially in warmer conditions.
We applied BioEnzyme to all the stained zones and left it to dwell for a full twenty minutes. That dwell time is not a precaution – it is the mechanism. Enzymatic cleaners need time to work through the contaminated material. Cut the dwell short and you are extracting before the chemistry has done what it is there to do.
Extraction – one wet pass, four dry
Once the BioEnzyme had run its full dwell, we moved to extraction with the Steam E600 Ninja at 150 PSI.
The pressure is appropriate for this type of upholstered surface – firm enough to flush the loosened material out of the fabric and upper foam layers, controlled enough to avoid forcing moisture deeper than necessary. But pressure alone doesn’t solve the over-wetting problem. The way you manage that on a mattress is through pass technique.
We ran one wet extraction pass across the stained areas – introducing the hot water rinse and immediately pulling it back out along with what the BioEnzyme had broken down. Then we ran four dry passes: extraction only, no additional water, pulling residual moisture out of the surface layer with each pass. By the end of the sequence, the mattress surface was slightly damp to the touch rather than wet – which is exactly where you want it. Enough of the interior had stayed dry that normal drying time applied, and there was no risk of what gets left behind in an over-wet mattress.
The difference between one wet pass and four dry passes versus running multiple wet passes might not seem significant on paper, but in terms of what happens inside the foam over the following hours, it is considerable.

After the final dry pass, the staining was gone across all affected areas. The surface was even and consistent throughout, with no visible residue or discolouration remaining from any of the original stains. The odour was gone – not reduced, not masked with a fragrance product, but gone, because the source had been addressed enzymatically rather than covered over.
The mattress left slightly damp and dried normally after we left the property.
What mattress cleaning actually involves
Most people don’t think about having a mattress professionally cleaned until there’s a specific incident – a child, a pet, an illness. That’s understandable. What’s worth knowing is that by the time a mattress has a visible urine stain or a noticeable smell, the biological contamination has already worked its way into the material beyond what any surface wipe or home spray will reach.
Enzymatic treatment is the only chemistry that actually addresses urine at the source. Everything else – household stain removers, steam alone, baking soda – treats what’s on the surface while the uric acid compounds below continue to off-gas whenever the mattress warms up.
The other thing to be careful of with home attempts is moisture. A mattress saturated during a DIY clean and then covered with bedding while still damp creates conditions that are considerably worse than the original stain. If you are dealing with urine on a mattress, blot what you can with a cold, dry cloth and let us assess it before introducing any product or additional water. The job is manageable when it is done in the right order with the right chemistry. It becomes more difficult when it has been worked on first.
