What we walked into
This was a two-piece job at a Kelowna home – a synthetic rug and a fabric recliner, both showing their age in different ways.
The rug had lost its brightness. No single event, no concentrated stain – just the steady accumulation of soil that happens in any lived-in space. The colours had gone flat.

The recliner told a more specific story. The main fabric was tired but manageable. The armrests were the real problem – heavily soiled in the way armrests always get, where skin contact, oils, and general use compound over time in a relatively small zone that takes far more wear than anywhere else on the piece.

Two items, but they needed entirely different approaches. That’s what made this job worth writing up.
Our process
The rug – synthetic fibres, full pressure
Synthetic rugs can handle aggressive cleaning, and in most cases they benefit from it. Soil in a synthetic pile doesn’t just sit on the surface – it works its way down over time, and low-pressure cleaning won’t reach it.
We started with a thorough dry vacuum before introducing any moisture. Pulling dry particulate out first means the extractor is doing real cleaning work rather than pushing wet grime deeper through the pile.
Next came Inferno pre-spray, applied across the full surface and left to dwell for seven to ten minutes. Pre-spray is what separates a surface clean from a deep clean – it breaks the bond between embedded soil and the fibre before you flush it out. Rushing the dwell time means the machine is doing all the work on its own, and there are limits to what extraction alone can pull from compacted fibres.
We extracted with the Ninja 500 at 500 PSI – full pressure for a synthetic surface.

On the final pass, we ran a pH-balancing rinse through the extractor tank. Alkaline residue left in a rug after cleaning is a resoiling accelerant – it makes the surface attract dirt faster than it otherwise would. Neutralising the chemistry on the way out is part of the job, not an afterthought.
The recliner – same visit, different rules
Upholstery runs on a completely different set of parameters than rug work. The fabric sits on foam and batting, the weave behaves differently under pressure, and it cannot handle the extraction settings you’d use on a synthetic rug. Too much pressure or too much moisture and you’re pushing water into the padding – which creates drying problems and, eventually, odour.
We used the Ninja E600 for the recliner, set to 150 PSI. That’s a deliberate figure – firm enough to clean the fabric properly, controlled enough to avoid saturating the layers underneath.
For the armrests, we applied Trashed Green gel directly to the soiled zones and worked it in before extraction. Armrests build up a layered, greasy kind of soiling from skin contact and oils that doesn’t respond well to hot water alone. The gel breaks down that residue at the surface, bringing it up where the extractor can pull it out. The rest of the recliner cleaned up evenly on the extraction pass.
The result
The rug came out bright and even throughout – the kind of difference that’s easy to underestimate until you see the two states side by side. The recliner cleaned up completely, armrests included, coming out consistent with the surrounding fabric.
Both items done, one visit.
The honest takeaway on mixed jobs
When people have a rug and a sofa or chair that both need attention, they sometimes assume it’s one continuous job – same machine, same chemistry, same settings. It isn’t. The approach that’s right for a synthetic rug at 500 PSI with a heavy pre-spray would be inappropriate for upholstered furniture. And a gentle upholstery setting won’t clean a rug properly.
The gap in pressure settings between these two items – 500 PSI versus 150 PSI – isn’t a small technical detail. It reflects a genuine difference in what each surface can handle and what it needs. Getting that wrong in either direction either leaves the job incomplete or risks damaging the material.
