What We Were Walking Into
This job came in with a few layers to it. A pet had knocked over a glass of red wine and tracked it across the carpet before anyone could contain it. So right away we weren’t dealing with a single concentrated stain – we were dealing with a spread.
Then, before calling us, the client had covered the affected area with baking soda. A lot of it. By the time our team arrived, the wine had fully dried and the soda had hardened into a dense crust sitting on top of the fibres – and packed down into them.
This is a different challenge from a fresh spill. Dried wine that’s had time to bond with carpet fibres, locked under a layer of compacted powder, requires a methodical approach and patience. There’s no shortcut version of this job.

Our Process
Stage 1 – Clear the Soda Before Anything Else
Before we could address the wine, we had to deal with what was sitting on top of it. The baking soda had mixed with the dried wine and set into the carpet backing. We ran our Ninja 500 extractor at full pressure, alternating between flush and dry cycles. It took five to six full passes before the powder was out of the fibres. Skipping this step would have just pushed the soda deeper when we added more moisture.
Stage 2 – Breaking Down the Tannins
Red wine stains differently from most things you’ll spill on a carpet. The colour comes from tannins – naturally occurring compounds in grapes that bond aggressively with fabric fibres when they dry. Hot water alone won’t lift them. General-purpose cleaners won’t lift them. You need a product designed specifically for tannin breakdown.
We used Steam Brown Out, applying it directly to the stain, then blotting methodically with white microfibre cloths. The goal is to transfer pigment from the carpet onto the cloth – not scrub it around. We repeated this cycle five times: apply, blot, dry, check, repeat.
Why white cloths? Because you can see exactly how much pigment is transferring with each pass. When the cloth stops picking up colour, you know where you stand.
Stage 3 – Acid Rinse and Hydrogen Peroxide
After the tannin treatment, the surface fibres were clean – but the backing still held residual staining. This happens with deep-set wine, and it’s the part that separates a good result from a full result.
We applied an acid rinse to neutralise the chemistry in the backing, followed by targeted hydrogen peroxide treatment – blotting and drying through three to five additional cycles until each layer came up clear.
Stage 4 – Final Treatment
The last traces of pigment required a professional-grade finishing product. This is the step we keep in reserve for jobs where everything else has done its work but a ghost of the stain is still visible. One final pass, and the carpet was done.

The Result
After the final dry cycle, the carpet showed no trace of wine, no residue from the soda, and no uneven patches. Clean throughout.
This was close to a full day of work. Not every red wine job is – a fresh spill caught quickly is a much simpler task. But a dried, spread stain complicated by a home remedy is genuinely one of the harder scenarios in carpet cleaning, and this one came out completely.
The Honest Takeaway on Red Wine Spills
Red wine is one of the most common calls we get, and the outcome almost always depends on what happened in the first few minutes after the spill – not what we do when we arrive.
If you’re dealing with a fresh spill right now: blot it, don’t scrub, use cold water only, and call us. Don’t add salt, don’t add soda, don’t use dish soap. Those things can complicate the chemistry and give the tannins more time to bond.
The sooner we get there, the simpler – and less expensive – the job.
